Broccoli Puree

Why Broccoli Is a Great First Food

Broccoli might not win “cutest vegetable” awards, but it’s a quiet little powerhouse — and a wonderful first step into savory flavours. Introducing greens early helps tiny taste buds learn that food doesn’t always have to be sweet, and that’s a gift that lasts well beyond babyhood.

Broccoli is a nutrient-dense vegetable that supports your baby’s early growth while gently introducing them to savory flavours. Starting with vegetables like broccoli can help shape healthy taste preferences early on. When cooked well and puréed smooth, broccoli is easy to digest and kind to tiny tummies.

Nutritional Value (Naturally Provides)

🥦        Vitamin C – supports immunity and iron absorption

🥦        Vitamin K – important for bone health

🥦        Folate – supports healthy growth and development

🥦        Fiber – supports gentle digestion

(All nutrients are naturally present — no additives needed.)

Ingredients

🥦        1 cup fresh broccoli florets

🥦        Water (for steaming and blending)

🥦        Optional: breast milk or formula (to thin, if needed)

Step by Step Guide:

Step 1: Prepare the Broccoli

Wash broccoli thoroughly and cut into small florets. Remove thick stems, as they can be fibrous.

Step 2: Steam Until Soft

Steam the broccoli for 8–10 minutes, or until very tender and easily pierced with a fork. Steaming helps retain nutrients while softening the texture.

Step 3: Blend Until Smooth

Transfer the steamed broccoli to a blender or food processor. Add a little warm water (or breast milk/formula) and blend until completely smooth.

Step 4: Adjust Texture

For Stage 1, the purée should be lump-free and spoon-smooth. Add more liquid if needed.

Step 5: Cool & Serve

Allow to cool slightly before serving. Always check temperature before feeding.

Gentle Taste Tip 💚

Broccoli has a naturally strong flavor. If your baby makes a face, that’s normal! Repeated exposure helps babies learn to enjoy new tastes. You can also pair broccoli later with naturally sweet vegetables like sweet potato or carrot as your baby progresses to combination purées.
