Rice Cereal Puree

Why Rice Cereal Is a Great First Food

Rice cereal has been a quiet first-food favorite for generations — simple, familiar, and wonderfully gentle on tiny tummies. With its mild taste and smooth texture, it helps babies focus on learning how to eat, without strong flavours getting in the way.

When made at home from plain rice, rice cereal feels especially comforting and wholesome. It’s easy to digest, predictable in texture, and perfect for early spoon-feeding days — whether it’s baby’s first taste or a quick, reassuring meal in between.

Nutritional Value (Naturally Provides)

🌾        Carbohydrates – gentle, steady energy

🌾        Small amounts of protein – supports growth

🌾        Iron (naturally present) – supports development

(Simple, single-grain nourishment with no additives.)

Ingredients

            •          ¼ cup white rice

            •          1 cup water

            •          Optional: breast milk or formula (to thin before serving)

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Rinse the Rice

Rinse the rice under running water until the water runs clear.

Step 2: Cook Until Very Soft

Add rice and water to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15–20 minutes until the rice is very soft and slightly overcooked.

Step 3: Blend Until Smooth

Transfer cooked rice with the cooking water to a blender. Blend until completely smooth and lump-free.

Step 4: Adjust Texture

Add warm water, breast milk, or formula until the cereal is thin and spoon-drippy — perfect for Stage 1.

Step 5: Cool & Serve

Allow to cool slightly. Always test temperature before feeding.

Gentle Texture Tip

If you’re unsure, go thinner. Early meals are about comfort and curiosity, not fullness.

Storage

            •          Refrigerate up to 24 hours

            •          Freeze small portions up to 1 month

            •          Reheat gently and stir well, adding liquid if needed

Mama Made Tip 💛

Some days baby may only take a few spoonfuls — and that’s perfectly okay. Every taste builds confidence.

Nutrition Note: Homemade vs Store-Bought Rice Cereal

Homemade Rice Cereal

            •          ✔ Made from plain rice

            •          ✔ No additives, preservatives, or sugars

            •          ✔ Full control over texture and freshness

            •          ✔ Naturally mild and easy to digest

            •          ✱ Iron content depends on rice type and portion

Store-Bought Rice Cereal

            •          ✔ Often iron-fortified

            •          ✔ Convenient and quick

            •          ✱ May contain added processing

            •          ✱ Texture can be harder to adjust for very early eaters

💛 Mama Made Perspective:

Both options can have a place. Homemade rice cereal is wonderful for clean, simple first tastes, while iron-fortified options can support iron needs as babies grow. Trust what works best for your baby and your routine.
