Why Yellow Lentil Is a Great First Food
Yellow Lentil is one of the gentlest lentils, making it a comforting way to introduce plant-based protein early on. Traditionally used as a first lentil for babies, it’s light, easy to digest, and naturally mild in flavor.
When cooked until very soft and blended smooth, moong dal becomes creamy and soothing — helping little tummies explore new textures while still feeling familiar and safe.
Nutritional Value (Naturally Provides)
🌱 Plant-based protein – supports growth and development
🌱 Iron – supports healthy blood and energy levels
🌱 Dietary fiber – supports gentle digestion
🌱 Folate – supports cell growth
🌱 Complex carbohydrates – steady, lasting energy
(Naturally nourishing with a light, tummy-friendly profile.)
Ingredients
🌱 2 tablespoons yellow moong dal (split & skinned)
🌱 1½ cups water
🌱 Optional: breast milk or formula (to thin)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Rinse & Soak
Rinse the yellow lentils thoroughly until water runs clear and soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour for easier digestion.
Step 2: Cook Until Very Soft
Add lentils and water to a saucepan or pressure cooker.
Cook until the lentils are completely soft and mushy – about 15–20 minutes simmering or 2–3 whistles in a pressure cooker.
Step 3: Blend Until Smooth
Transfer cooked lentils with the cooking water to a blender and blend until completely smooth and lump-free.
Step 4: Adjust Texture
Add warm water, breast milk, or formula to achieve a thin, spoon-drippy Stage 1 texture.
Step 5: Cool & Serve
Allow to cool slightly and check temperature before feeding.
Gentle Texture Tip 🌼
Lentils should be thinner than you expect — early lentils are about comfort, not fullness.
Storage
• Refrigerate up to 24 hours
