Apple & Pear Puree

Naturally sweet. Smooth. Simple.

A gentle little combination of two familiar fruits, Apple + Pear Puree is a lovely way to introduce your baby to naturally sweet flavours. Both fruits become soft and silky when cooked, making them easy to blend into a smooth puree for little mouths.

It’s especially lovely for babies who are just beginning their food journey — simple ingredients, no added sugar, and lots of natural fruit goodness.

Why It’s a Great Early Food

🍎 Naturally sweet – Apple and pear have a gentle sweetness that can make early foods appealing without needing any added sugar.

🍐 Soft and easy to puree – Cooking softens the fruit, making it easy to blend into a smooth texture suitable for early eaters.

🌿 A little fibre – Both fruits provide dietary fibre, which can be part of a varied diet as your baby begins eating solids.

💛 Naturally nourishing – Apples and pears provide vitamins, minerals and other beneficial plant compounds as part of a varied diet.

🌈 A simple way to explore flavour – Combining two familiar fruits gives your little one a chance to experience a new flavour combination while keeping the ingredient list simple.

Fruit and vegetables are encouraged from around 6 months as part of a varied complementary diet.

Ingredients

  • 1 small apple, ripe
  • 1 small pear, ripe
  • 2–4 tbsp water, as needed

That’s it!

No sugar. No salt. No honey.

Step-by-Step

Step 1: Wash & prepare

Wash the apple and pear thoroughly.

Peel both fruits and remove the cores, seeds and any hard parts.

Step 2: Cut into small pieces

Cut the apple and pear into small, even pieces. Keeping the pieces similar in size helps them cook evenly.

Step 3: Cook until soft

Place the fruit pieces in a small saucepan with a little water.

Cover and gently cook over low to medium heat until both fruits are completely soft and easily mashable with a fork.

This is particularly important for apple, which is firm when raw. Hard fruits such as apples and pears should be cooked until soft for babies.

Step 4: Blend until smooth

Allow the cooked fruit to cool slightly and then transfer it to a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth.

Add a little of the cooking water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach the consistency your baby needs.

Step 5: Check the texture and serve

For a baby just beginning solids, aim for a smooth, soft, lump-free puree. As your baby becomes more comfortable with food, you can gradually make the puree thicker and slightly more textured.

Babies can gradually move from smooth purees towards mashed and lumpier textures as their feeding skills develop.

Start with a small spoonful and let your baby decide how much they want.

Serve the puree cool or at room temperature, and always check the temperature before feeding.

A lovely next step

Once your baby has tried Apple + Pear separately and together, you can begin pairing it with other foods such as:

  • Apple + Pear + Oats
  • Apple + Pear + Banana
  • Apple + Pear + Sweet Potato
  • Apple + Pear + Baby Rice

Storage

  • Best served fresh
  • Refrigerator: Use within 1–2 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in small baby-sized portions if desired and use within about 1 month for best quality.

Thaw safely in the refrigerator and stir well before serving. Do not refreeze food that has already been thawed.

🌿 Mama Made Tip

Let the fruit do the sweet talking.

There’s no need to add sugar, honey or juice — ripe apple and pear already bring plenty of natural sweetness.

And remember, your baby’s taste buds are learning too. Some days they may love it, and other days they may turn their little face away. That’s okay! Keep offering a variety of foods and flavours without pressure. It can take repeated opportunities for babies to become comfortable with new tastes and textures.

Mama Made Note

Little tummies, little portions. 💛

At the beginning of complementary feeding, breast milk or infant formula remains an important source of nutrition. Solid foods are introduced gradually alongside milk feeds.

Always supervise your baby while eating and make sure food is prepared to a texture they can safely manage.
